Procession of the unemployed, a feature of
social protest in interwar Britain. The first
took place from Glasgow to London in 1922 and
another in 1929. In 1932 the National
Unemployed Workers' Movement organized the
largest demonstration, with groups converging
on London from all parts of the country, but
the most emotive was probably the Jarrow
Crusade of 1936, when 200 unemployed shipyard
workers marched to the capital (see
unemployment).
